19) How much weight do I need to loose?
This is an individual choice. A simple check in the mirror is the easiest way to determine when you've reached your goal. There are other techniques available such as Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist measurement.
-
Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI= weight [in kg] / height [in metres]2
BMI ratings
Underweight - less than 18.5; Normal 18.5-24.9; Overweight 25-30; Obese - more than 30.
Waist Circumference
Waist measurements (in centimetres) for a healthy Caucasian male are less than 94cm and for a healthy woman are less than 80cm.
20) What is the significance of weight versus fat?
Weight has an influence on your health risk but fat distribution has an even greater influence. It's not how fat you are, it's where your fat is stored that is most important. Fat stored on the hips and thighs is much healthier than fat stored around the waist.
People with more muscle mass weigh more but carry less body fat and cellulite. The more muscle mass you have the leaner you look and the higher your metabolism so it's harder to put on fat. The way to reduce fat everywhere on the body is to exercise, be as active as you can each day and eat well.
21) What is the best way to loose body fat?
Gradual fat loss is the best way to ensure you maintain your body fat loss in the long term. All exercises contribute to fat loss including your activity level and movement throughout the day. We recommend you incorporate weight training into your exercise program to build lean muscle mass to improve your metabolism and keep the fat off long term. This will also help you tone up and look lean.
22) How do I tone up my stomach?
A swollen stomach is a combination of body fat and loose muscles. To tone it up you need to follow a healthy eating and exercise plan focusing on "core conditioning" exercises that work the trunk areas of your body and cardiovascular exercises. This will tighten your body's trunk. Join personal training for advice.
23) What are the main benefits of exercise?
Regular exercise improves your quality of life and helps you live longer. It also helps you alleviate stress, gain control of your weight and increases your metabolism. After exercise your metabolic rate remains at an increased level, which helps weight loss in the long term.
24) Why not just diet?
Exercise helps you lose fat quicker and maintain this loss it in the long term. Exercise expends additional energy, it prevents loss in muscle mass and increases your metabolism. People combining diet and exercise have the highest success rate. Combining weight training and anaerobic exercise burns a high degree of fat during the recovery phase after a workout.
25) How do I change my personal details?
To alter your personal details please email us at info@bodyfirst.net.au.
26) Are Body First's services aimed at men or women?
Body First products and services are aimed at women however men are welcome to join. In addition to providing a tailored exercise program for members, Body First is the first business of its kind to select and sell fitness products which have been chosen specifically for women. Women's bodies and lifestyles are different to men so this must be taken into consideration when purchasing exercise equipment or beginning a fitness regime.
27) Are Body First services available nationally?
Body First is an Australian web-based business available only to customers within Australia.
28) Are nutrition supplements of value?
Nutrition supplements can help ensure you get all the nutrients you need, they assist in muscle recovery, help increase your metabolism and serve as convenient snacks on the run. To boost your metabolism we recommend 5-6 small nutrient packed meals per day and nutritional supplements conveniently serve this purpose when you're at work or when you don't have time to prepare food. Nutritional supplements are by no means meant to replace a poor diet.
29) There is lots of confusion around regarding Protein versus Carbohydrates in your diet. What do you recommend?
We recommend 2 - 3 palm sized serves of lean protein (no more than 2g protein per kilogram of body weight) per day. Some examples of lean protein are fish, eggs, low fat cheese nuts, lean meat, chicken without skin and tofu. Consuming too much protein is bad for your health as it depletes your calcium stores and puts a strain on your liver and kidneys.
The preferred sources of carbohydrate foods for most people are where the Glycemic Index (GI) is low. Low GI foods (such as multigrain breads, oats, muesli, barley, legumes, pasta and dairy produce) provide a more sustained source of energy and avoid the peaks and troughs of blood glucose that can occur with high GI foods.
The GI ranking of carbohydrate-rich foods is based on their measured effects on blood glucose levels. High GI foods will raise blood glucose to a greater extent than an equal amount of carbohydrate given as a low GI food. The GI is clearly important for people with diabetes who need to control their blood glucose through dietary means, but the evidence is now strong to show that the GI is important for everyone. High GI diets have been linked to heart disease, increased risk of diabetes and overweight/obesity.
30) Do creatine supplements increase the size and strength of muscles?
Creatine phosphate is a compound found in muscle and is involved in meeting immediate demands for creating energy. Creatine will increase creatine phosphate levels in the muscle thereby increasing the ability of that muscle to work. Several studies have indeed shown the benefits of creatine. Combining creatine supplements with your exercise program is the most significant factor in increasing size and strength.
